Amityville’s two-time captain of the varsity soccer team, Mauricio Rivas, signed his Letter of Intent on May 7 to play Division I soccer at St. John’s University this fall.

This year, Rivas scored 17 goals, many of them game-winners, on his way to leading the Warriors to the playoffs the past two out of three years. He helped Amityville soccer win its first playoff game since 1986.

The soccer star is also at the head of the classroom, ranked 15th in this year’s graduating class.

Rivas will play under the Red Storm’s head coach David Masur, a former professional soccer player. As head coach, Masur led St. John’s to a NCAA National Championship in 1996.
